Information
The theme of this exhibition is ‘Heaven and Earth.’
Cranes will soar in the heaven. In Japan it used to be said that the crane lived for one thousand years, making it is both an auspicious bird as well as a symbol of peace.
The mobile teahouse, Hanako’s Teahouse 2, will also be installed in the gallery. This represents my collaboration with two architects, Alex H. Lee and Yamakawa Rikitoshi. All the materials used to create the teahouse come from nature and eventually will return to the earth. The wall of the teahouse is made of reeds and the Japanese crane also uses reeds to make its nest on the ground. During the tea ceremony, visitors will be served green tea in the teahouse/nest. The fresh tea leaves grow from the earth and the special tea bowls used to drink it are made from clay that also comes from the earth.
Another concept behind this exhibition is Hiroshima. Since the architect ’s family lives in Hiroshima, the first meeting to design Hanako’s Teahouse 2 took place in Hiroshima and the teahouse itself was made in there. Hanako Miwa was not born in Hiroshima but she feels the fact the teahouse project started from Hiroshima is very meaningful to her. She hopes to transmit a message of peace from Hiroshima through this exhibition.
